Inspiration can be found almost anywhere — in books, song lyrics, art, news headlines, magazines, people-watching, TV commercials, and more. Here’s where six different creative professionals say they find theirs.
Mischa Purcell, wedding and portrait photographer: Sometimes I look at classic art in a museum and think, “That-s a great pose for a couple!” Other times, I flip through fashion magazines and see what-s -in.- But most of all, I get inspiration from imagining the possibilities. When I-m making photographic art, I imagine every image before I even pick up the camera. Then I choose the right lens and attempt to re-create my imagination through the viewfinder.
Rich Sigberman, artist and illustrator (pictured, right): Personally, while there have been some times when inspiration struck, far more often it-s the -99 percent perspiration vs. 1 percent inspiration- model that works for me. The initial effort and time spent must be present, and maybe then inspiration will strike! When it does, it-s pure art that seems to come flowing out, and the artist may look at the clock and notice that two or three hours have passed, and boy is he hungry!
Bradley Charbonneau, web designer: I find inspiration in my weekly strategy sessions with my business partner. We discuss various website themes that are the best fit for each client, our strategic approach to solving their problems with a customized web design, and other potential issues that may arise.
Karen Goldfarb, copywriter: Professionally, often from Communication Arts Magazine. Personally, from a zillion sci-fi writers and J. J. Abrams.
Lauren Deane Evans, art and creative director (pictured, above): I get most of my inspiration from my 8-year-old son. He is the most creative free-thinker I know. When I grow up, I want to be just like him.
Jerome Rossen, musician: I get my inspiration from local nature, the changing Bay Area weather, and collaborating with creative people. With those last two, you never know where it may take you. When all else fails, sometimes my greatest inspiration comes from a deadline!
